New Peters Ad Overlooks Record of Bad Leadership For Michigan Farmers

Livonia, MI— Sen. Gary Peters has a new ad out to cover up his record of ineffectiveness and failure for Michigan’s farmers, but the claims don’t stand up to the facts.

Peters is a staunch partisan who votes with Chuck Schumer 95% of the time and who supported the damaging, extreme Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule in the House. WOTUS was widely criticized as an example of burdensome federal overreach that restricted family farmers’ operations.

“Sen. Peters is taking credit for other people’s work while trying to erase his own terrible track record with Michigan’s farmers. He should have shown up for the job he was assigned to do– protect and prepare us for a pandemic. Sen. Peters still has not answered for his failure to ensure we were prepared for a pandemic in his role on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said Abby Walls, campaign spokesperson.

In 2015, Michigan Farm Bureau members urged Senator Peters to ditch WOTUS regulations that were hurting their businesses, but Peters ultimately chose to stand with federal regulators over farmers.

Two years later, a regulatory reform package came before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee (HSGAC) where Peters is a ranking member, that would have addressed the issues WOTUS imposed.

The Michigan Farm Bureau’s AgriPac subsequently listed John James as among those selected to receive the “Friend of Agriculture” designation and endorsement for U.S. Senate in 2020.

Sen. Peters can’t work with anyone in the Senate since he votes with Chuck Schumer 95% of the time, and, in turn, failed to get the job done for Michigan farmers,” Walls said. “Gary Peters has been a disaster for farmers these last six years, and it’s become clear that John James will be an ally who will fight for our Michigan producers.”
